Chapter 11 - The Maker Village

At the bottom of the mountain under layers of ice, a massive wooden wheel had fallen from its damaged frame and now leaned against the cliff wall. Ario looked straight up and saw a large hole in the cliff with a flow of water frozen mid-stream. He deduced that this contraption had perhaps once been a watermill. Right next to it was a collapsed wooden building that revealed a huge stone chimney oven. He guessed that this could have been a baker’s cottage and the mill was used to crush the grain. His mouth watered at the thought of what sort of delicacies a Maker baker would have created.

Guided by his compass, Ario led the group along what would have once been the hustling and bustling streets of this Maker village. Peeking out from under the snow were broken pulleys and rigging, parts of contraptions and machines, capsized wooden vehicles, and crumbling edifices of stone buildings. Makers now long gone would have once walked down these very streets full of creativity and invention. Which Makers? How? When? Why weren’t they here any more? His heart swelled with confusion and frustration.

Melody walked up to him and placed a hand on his arm, she too felt overwhelmed by what surrounded them, “What do you think happened here?” she asked.

Tallac was examining the ruinous buildings more closely and pointed to the blackened charred remains of a number of wooden beams that could be seen under thinning ice, “It appears the inhabitants were removed by force.”

Ario and Melody shook their heads sadly. While his heart was heavy, Ario knew that they had come so far and now more than ever he had to find the one Maker who would know the answers to all these questions. The compass pointed to the middle of the town where the amphitheater stood.

“Come on, the compass says this way” said Ario.

“It’s unlikely any Makers would remain” said Tallac in a solemn voice.

“While this compass still works, I’m not giving up on the Magnum Opus,” Ario called behind him determinedly, as he ran ahead.

Melody gave chase and they ran to the center of the village, stopping in front of a damaged stone archway hand carved by a Maker mason. It was adorned with intricate stone carvings of musical notes and Maker hieroglyphics now indecipherable. Melody took Ario’s hand and gave it a squeeze, they smiled sadly at each other as they walked through the archway and stepped into the amphitheater. While it had eroded over the years, the gloriousness of the structure had not been lost. Row upon row of stone steps climbed to form a now crumbled semicircle stadium surrounding a floor and stage. Ario knew instinctively that in a time long ago, this is where Makers of every shape and size would have gathered and performed unhindered and free. He stopped short. Where the orchestra pit would have once stood was a massive pile of smashed musical instruments preserved under ice. Ario
